Formula Composition

Chief Herb

Gui Zhi — Cinnamon Twig (Cinnamomum cassia)

Releases the Exterior, dispels Wind-Cold, warms and unblocks the channels, and promotes sweating. Addresses both the pathogen and the Wei Qi disharmony.

Deputy Herb

Bai Shao — White Peony Root (Paeonia lactiflora)

Nourishes Ying Qi and Blood, astringes (prevents excessive sweating), and harmonizes with Gui Zhi to balance Ying and Wei.

Assistant Herbs

Sheng Jiang — Fresh Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Aids Gui Zhi in releasing the Exterior, warms the Stomach, stops nausea, and enhances the effect of the chief herb.

Da Zao — Jujube Date (Ziziphus jujuba)

Nourishes Blood, tonifies Spleen Qi, moderates the formula, and harmonizes Ying and Wei with Sheng Jiang.

Envoy Herb

Zhi Gan Cao — Honey-fried Licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis)

Tonifies Qi, harmonizes all the herbs, and moderates the dispersing action of Gui Zhi.
