Formula Composition

Chief Herb

Huang Lian — Coptis Rhizome (Coptis chinensis)

Clears Heat and drains Fire, especially from the Heart and Stomach. Resolves Fire toxicity and dampness. Berberine — its primary alkaloid — has broad antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity.

Deputy Herbs

Huang Qin — Scutellaria Root (Scutellaria baicalensis)

Clears Heat and dries Dampness from the Upper Burner (Lungs), cools Blood, stops bleeding, calms the fetus, reduces fever.

Huang Bai — Phellodendron Bark (Phellodendron amurense)

Clears Heat and dries Dampness from the Lower Burner, drains Kidney Fire, treats damp-heat in the genitourinary system.

Assistant Herb

Zhi Zi — Gardenia Fruit (Gardenia jasminoides)

Clears Heat from the Three Burners, cools Blood, reduces jaundice, and drains Heat via urine. Calms irritability and restlessness.
