Formula Composition

Chief Herbs

Mu Dan Pi — Moutan Cortex (Paeonia suffruticosa)

Clears Heat from Blood stagnation (the 'added' herb from base Xiao Yao San). Cools Blood and invigorates it simultaneously.

Zhi Zi — Gardenia Fruit (Gardenia jasminoides)

Clears Heat from the Three Burners and specifically addresses the yu-heat (constraint-heat) from Liver Qi stagnation.

Deputy Herbs

Chai Hu — Bupleurum Root (Bupleurum chinense)

Spreads Liver Qi, releases constraint, raises clear Yang, and guides the formula to the Liver and Gallbladder channels.

Dang Gui — Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis)

Nourishes and invigorates Liver Blood, regulates menstruation, and ensures the formula nourishes as it moves.

Bai Shao — White Peony Root (Paeonia lactiflora)

Nourishes Liver Blood and Yin, softens the Liver, and relieves spasms and pain.

Assistant Herbs

Bai Zhu — White Atractylodes (Atractylodes macrocephala)

Strengthens the Spleen and dries Dampness, supporting Earth to prevent Liver over-control.

Fu Ling — Poria (Poria cocos)

Strengthens Spleen, resolves Dampness, and calms the Shen.

Bo He — Peppermint (Mentha haplocalyx)

Assists Chai Hu in spreading Liver Qi and clears Heat from the head and eyes.

Envoy Herb

Zhi Gan Cao — Honey-fried Licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis)

Harmonizes all herbs and supports the Spleen.
