Formula Composition

Chief Herb

Long Dan Cao — Gentiana Root (Gentiana scabra)

Strongly drains Liver and Gallbladder Fire and clears Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner. The defining herb for excess Liver Fire patterns.

Deputy Herbs

Huang Qin — Scutellaria Root (Scutellaria baicalensis)

Clears Heat and dries Dampness from the Liver and Lungs, cools Blood, reduces fever.

Zhi Zi — Gardenia Fruit (Gardenia jasminoides)

Clears Heat from the Three Burners, drains via urine, cools Blood and calms the Shen.

Assistant Herbs

Ze Xie — Alisma (Alisma orientale)

Drains Dampness and Heat from the Lower Burner via urination.

Mu Tong — Akebia Stem

Drains Heat downward through the Bladder, promotes urination, clears Heart Fire.

Che Qian Zi — Plantain Seed (Plantago asiatica)

Promotes urination, clears Liver channel Heat, separates clear from turbid.

Sheng Di Huang — Raw Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa)

Nourishes Yin and cools Blood — preventing the bitter cold herbs from injuring Liver Blood and Yin.

Dang Gui — Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis)

Nourishes Blood to protect against the drying effects of the formula.

Envoy Herbs

Chai Hu — Bupleurum Root (Bupleurum chinense)

Guides the formula to the Liver and Gallbladder channels. Spreads Liver Qi to prevent stagnation.

Gan Cao — Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza uralensis)

Harmonizes all herbs and moderates the harsh bitter-cold nature of the formula.
