Formula Composition

Chief Herbs

Tian Ma — Gastrodia Rhizome (Gastrodia elata)

Calms Liver Wind, relieves headache and dizziness, and calms Liver Yang. Classically indicated for all Liver Wind patterns — tremors, headache, dizziness, and convulsions.

Gou Teng — Uncaria Stem with Hooks (Uncaria rhynchophylla)

Extinguishes Liver Wind, clears Liver Heat, and calms the Liver. Reduces blood pressure and relieves spasm.

Deputy Herb

Shi Jue Ming — Abalone Shell (Haliotis diversicolor)

Anchors Liver Yang, clears Liver Heat, improves vision, and relieves red or painful eyes from Liver Fire.

Assistant Herbs

Huang Qin — Scutellaria (Scutellaria baicalensis)

Clears Heat from the Liver and Upper Burner, reduces inflammation.

Zhi Zi — Gardenia Fruit (Gardenia jasminoides)

Clears Heat from the Three Burners, calms irritability and restlessness from Heat.

Du Zhong — Eucommia Bark (Eucommia ulmoides)

Tonifies Liver and Kidney — supporting the Yin root that is deficient beneath rising Yang.

Niu Xi — Achyranthes Root (Achyranthes bidentata)

Tonifies Liver and Kidney, invigorates Blood, and guides Fire and Yang downward from the head.

Sang Ji Sheng — Loranthus (Taxillus chinensis)

Tonifies Liver and Kidney Yin and Blood, expels Wind-Damp.

Yi Mu Cao — Motherwort (Leonurus japonicus)

Invigorates Blood and reduces blood pressure. Supports the formula's cardiovascular effects.

Fu Shen — Poria with Pine Root (Poria cocos)

Calms the Shen, strengthens the Spleen, and promotes restful sleep.

Ye Jiao Teng — Polygonum Vine (Polygonum multiflorum)

Nourishes Heart Blood and Liver Blood, calms the Shen, and promotes sleep. Addresses the deficiency driving the Yang uprising.
