General Acupuncture

The basics of acupuncture — what it is, how it works, and what to expect.

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine involving the insertion of very thin needles through the skin at strategic points on the body. It is primarily used to treat pain and increasingly used for overall wellness, including stress management.

Very safe when performed by a licensed acupuncturist. We use single-use, sterile, disposable needles — never reused. Dr. Winke is a board-certified, Florida-licensed acupuncturist (DACM, L.Ac.).

Needles are hair-thin — most people feel little to nothing, sometimes a brief pinch or a dull "heavy" sensation that signals the point is active. Most patients find sessions deeply relaxing, and many fall asleep.

Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body that correspond to neural pathways and fascial planes, triggering the release of endorphins, modulating the autonomic nervous system, and reducing inflammatory markers. Modern research continues to validate what classical practitioners observed thousands of years ago.

It depends on the condition and how long you’ve had it. Acute issues may resolve in a few visits; chronic conditions like sciatica or fibromyalgia typically respond to a course of weekly sessions, with Dr. Winke reassessing your progress along the way.

New patient visits are 75 minutes. Follow-up Signature Treatments are 60 minutes. Express Treatments are 30 minutes.

Loose, comfortable clothing is best. We need access to your arms and legs and sometimes your back and abdomen. We provide draping for all treatments.

Yes — eat a light meal 1-2 hours before. Do not come on an empty stomach or immediately after a large meal.

We recommend avoiding intense exercise for a few hours after treatment. Light walking is fine.

Conditions & Effectiveness

How acupuncture works for specific concerns — pain, stress, fertility, and more.

A wide range — pain (back, neck, knee, sciatica, shoulder), headaches and migraines, stress and sleep, nerve issues (carpal tunnel, neuropathy), sports injuries, women’s health, and more. See our conditions menu.

Yes — there’s a substantial evidence base for pain conditions, headaches, and stress, among others. Our condition pages cite the specific studies for each.

Acupuncture reduces pain by stimulating A-delta and C nerve fibers, triggering endorphin and enkephalin release, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, and modulating the pain gate mechanism in the spinal cord.

Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reduces cortisol levels, increases serotonin and dopamine, and promotes the deep relaxation response patients often describe as "acu-land."

Yes. Acupuncture has been shown to improve ovarian function, regulate menstrual cycles, reduce stress hormones that interfere with implantation, and improve uterine blood flow. Dr. Winke works with patients both independently and alongside IVF protocols.

Acupuncture uses fine needles at specific points; cupping uses suction to release muscle tension and improve circulation; gua sha uses gentle scraping to relieve tightness. They’re often combined in one treatment plan.
